Cell-Life's iDART pharmacy dispensing software has been
implemented at 11 sites across the country, with a total of over 17000
patients now being monitored through the system.
The software has developed substantially during the year with numerous new features having been added to the overall product offering. Below is a summary of each of the current iDART sites categorised into the five different provinces in which we are working:
iDART in the Western Cape (4 sites):Hannan Crusaid Centre, Gugulethu The Hannan Crusaid Centre in Gugulethu was one of the first sites to receive iDART and it is one of the largest in the Cape Town area. This site provides the ideal testing site for Cell-Life as they are very close to the offices, and also experience high patient numbers (latest reporting period showed 2515 patients receiving ARVs through iDART). This site has received all versions of iDART from the original VB system, to the latest version that integrates with the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape (PAWC)'s patient management system, eKapa II. Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, UCT Medical School With a recent hardware upgrade, the pharmacists working at the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre are enjoying the overall speed improvements of the new computer. Although a small site in terms of numbers (there are roughly 500 active patients that receive their drugs through this pharmacy), this is the only facility that uses the down-referral model supported through iDART. The pharmacists working at the central pharmacy create monthly packages of ARVs for patients who collect their medication at clinics closer to their homes. Masiphumelele, Noordhoek This down-referral clinic is where patients come to collect their pre-packaged monthly supply of ARVs, dispensed at the pharmacy at the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre. Barcode scanning make the monitoring of patients simple, easy and efficient. This facility was also recently involved in evaluating a pilot project in which cellphones were used to scan in ARV packages, monitored through iDART. Nyanga CHC, Nyanga This site is the first official pilot site for the two integrated systems of iDART and the Provincial Administrative of the Western Cape (PAWC)'s patient management system, eKapa II. Although Cell-Life are not directly involved in the technical support of this facility, we have been informed from our partners at eInnovation that the system is running well. Recent estimates from eInnovation gave 150 patients currently receiving ARVs at this newly accredited ARV site. iDART in the North West Province: (4 sites)Taung Treatment Centre, Taung (Elton John Site 1) This was the first iDART site to be implemented in the North West province, and was recently showcased in a short TV documentary about Cell-Life and its products. Starting in May 2006 this site has grown substantially with the most recent report of over 3030 patients who have been initiated on ARVs at this facility through iDART. Tshepong Wellness Centre, Klerksdorp (Elton John Site 3) This site is part of a comprehensive down-referral system which includes private and public doctors, down-referral clinics and the Klerksdorp Hospital Complex. To date, over 3620 patients are receiving their ARV drugs at Tshepong Wellness through iDART, and the two users are thoroughly enjoying the time-saving benefits of iDART (reportedly 2 hours!). Having recently experienced a hardware failure with their label printer, the ARV pharmacy staff were forced to return to manual dispening. A replacement printer was quickly sent to Tshepong, and the staff were delighted and relieved to be operational again with iDART. Ganyesa District Hospital, Ganyesa (Elton John Site 4) Of all iDART sites, the Ganyesa District Hospital is the most rural. One of the biggest challenges with this facility has been power outages and this has caused frustration with the iDART user working at this ARV pharmacy. Unfortunately, availability of electricity is one requirement for iDART at this point in time. A new ARV pharmacy was built and iDART was introduced at the same time that the pharmacy was opened. In the first few months of operations, over 1500 patients have been registered through the system.
Klerksdorp Hospital (Paeds), Klerksdorp (Elton John Site 5) iDART in the Northern Cape (1 site):Galeshewe Day Hospital, Kimberley (Elton John Site 2) This facility is the only one in the Northern Cape to date, and are doing superbly well. The facility was originally designed to accommodate 500 patients, but through iDART over 1868 patients have been initiated on treatment at this clinic. Due to renovations, the iDART system has been physically moved on a number of occasions, testing its durability - it has passed! They have begun a down-referral process and iDART is assisting with this. iDART in Gauteng (1 site):Hillbrow CHC, Johannesburg This site is managed through the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) and have been using iDART since October 2006. Their patient numbers have grown substantially over the past year, and is reportedly the largest clinic-based ARV dispensing site in the country. Cell-Life and RHRU aim to implement iDART at a number of additional sites around Johannesburg in 2008. iDART in the Eastern Cape (2 sites):Through our partnership with BroadReach HealthCare (BRHC), two facilities in the Eastern Cape have recently received the iDART system. Cell-Life have not been directly involved in the implementation nor support of these sites, but instead, have trained up an implementation team from BRHC. We are hopeful that many additional sites will benefit from the iDART system in 2008 and beyond, through this collaborative partnership.
