The first Site Implementation in Taung
Monday, 02 October 2006

In early May, Sarah Brown and Nico de Wet travelled to the Taung District Hospital. This is the biggest ARV site in the North West province, with the ARV pharmacy handling patient loads of over 1800 patients.

With financial assistance from the Elton John Aids Foundation Foudation, Cell-Life were hoping to assist the pharmacists and their assistants in dispensing and managing their dispensing process through our open source pharmacy software program, iDART. The 1st trip in May was a fantastic, an eye-opening and learning experience for the Cell-Life team. After 5 days of installations and training the team returned to Cape Town.

For the next two months, our two users Margaret and Gladys successfully managed to use iDART for a small group of their patients. It was important for them to continue using the system even though it was not completely operational. For them, it reiterated everything they had learnt during training, and for Cell-Life, usage with over-the-counter dispensing provided invaluable feedback and helped identify areas in iDART that could be improved.

At the end of June, Sarah Brown and Jalal Ghiassi-Razavi returned for a follow-up visit, and installed an updated version iDART (based on their feedback). On the 3rd July, after weekend training, a massive stock take, and a celebratory dinner, the Taung Treatment Centre became completely operational using iDART to manage their ARV dispensing. And at the end of July, our users printed off automatically generated reports, detailing all the activities and drug stock levels occuring in the pharmacy during the month. Cell-Life is greatful to everyone at the Taung Treatment Centre for their assistance in ensuring that this site was a success!
