Cell-Life recently attended the inaugural OpenMRS
user group meeting in Cape Town. OpenMRS is an open source medical
record system that can be used as the foundation of other applications.
Outcomes include OpenMRS being selected for use in a patient
information system being developed by Cell-Life.
With Cell-Life's philosophy of sharing the opportunity to attend the inaugural OpenMRS user group meeting was one that would never have been missed. Delegates from Kenya, Tanzania, Canada, USA, South Africa and other countries decended on Noordhoek, Cape Town, for a week long event. The focus was on both OpenMRS and mobile data collection and so Cell-Life shared its experiences in mobile application development and deployment. Opportunites for extending OpenMRS with a mobile data collection module were explored along with many other possibilities.
Since attending the event Cell-Life has investigated using OpenMRS and its associated data model in upcoming solutions. One of these, Pisys - a patient information system for ARV clinics, will be using the framework provided by OpenMRS. By using OpenMRS in Pisys Cell-Life hopes both to further its commitment to open source and to producing quality solutions for the public health sector in South Africa. Cell Life salutes the OpenMRS team and the event organizers from the South African Medical Research Council. Thank-you!
