Antiretroviral treatment (ART) is a lifelong regimen with logistical challenges in the public health sector such as the provision and distribution of medication, continuous patient monitoring and thecommunication of relevant data. This report is a summary of an investigation into the development of information and communication technology (ICT)-based tools to address the logistical challenges of HIV treatment. South Africa has one of the highest uptakes and demographic distributions of cellular technology in the world, and has widespread access to and use of the Internet. With this infrastructure and technology, the implementation of an innovative, simple and costeffective information-gathering and provision system for ART is possible.
